In no particular order, some common issues include:
- Rhythmic grouping/beaming
- Transpose Parts
- Accidentals/Enharmonics — especially in parts for transposing instruments.
- Tempo value for compound time
- Woodwinds and Brass — Condense into shared staves according to guidelines:
- Indicate players for woodwinds and brass on shared staves. E.g. “1.” for when flute 1 is playing, “a2” when flute 1 and 2 are in unison.
- If parts between shared staves are complex, divide them.
- Indicate “div.” for divided string sections
- Use “unis.” to end divisi
- Indicate clearly on the score if it is a Concert score (”in C”) or a Transposed score.
- Account for all dynamics and articulations. Hairpins generally must have a dynamic at the end.
- Avoid having tempo and meter changes at page turns. Recommend 4 measures per page.
- Use a double bar line for tempo changes, meter changes, and key changes.
- Fermatas are in the same metric position for all instruments. For example, if the fermata is on beat 3, players who have a whole note rest for that measure should show a half note rest, then a quarter note rest with the fermata.
- Metronome markings and other tempo text should be above both the top staff and the strings.
- Include title page with instrument list and duration.
- Use frequent rehearsal letters
- Page Turns
- Printing to PDF —- make sure it does not change the size of the paper
- Consider range of individual timpani
