File Paths

How would describe the location of our classroom?

• It’s in Baltimore, Maryland
• It’s on the Peabody Campus at 1 East Mount Vernon Place
• It’s in the Conservatory building
• It’s on the third floor
• It’s room # 303

How would you describe the location of file and folders on your computer?

Like physical places have an address, files and folders on our computer have a file path.

File paths are described from GENERAL to SPECIFIC. In the example of a physical address, it would be like writing the address as:

USA > Maryland > Baltimore > Mount Vernon Pl > East > 1 > Room 303c

The top level of a file path is the physical DRIVE (aka VOLUME). This is referred to as the ROOT directory.

If you do not have external drives connected to your computer, you probably only have one possible root directory: Macintosh HD
